6 of the best fish and chip spots in London (and some English fizz to wash it down!)

24 Mar, 2018

With English Tourism Week coming to a close, we decided to revist some of the best fish and chip bars and restaurants in London. And what goes best with all that batter? Bubbles, of course Here are six not-to-be-missed food spots and some English sparkling wine recommendations to go with them.

Hook, Camden

Hook prides itself on its 100% sustainable credentials from the fish to the biodegradable cutlery, and the locals love it for their unique, homemade sauces and spices. This is ‘new school’ fish and chips at its finest, complete with panko breadcrumbs, wasabi tempura and Hook’s very own seaweed salt. Well worth a visit.

63-65 Parkway, Camden Town, London NW1 7PP

The Golden Hind

The Golden Hind has been a Marylebone institution for over 100 years and there is comfort in that number. The fish and chips here are classic in style, with thick batter and old fashioned mushy peas, as if plucked from newspaper cones on Brighton pier. It’s a little slice of England on a plate.

71a-73 Marylebone Lane, Marylebone, London W1U 2PN

Poppies Fish & Chips

If retro in spades is what you’re after, then give Poppies a try at either of their London locations.  Waitresses in red headscarves, jukeboxes and even jellied-eels give the place a fun, fresh diner-esque appeal. The fish and chips are to die for and while not the cheapest, it’s the full experience you get, just minus the sea.

6-8 Hanbury St, London E1 6QR and 30 Hawley Crescent, Camden Town, London NW1 8NP

Olley’s Fish Experience

Talking of ‘experience’, Olley’s in Herne Hill is an interesting place. Laid out in brown wood like a seafront restaurant circa 1984, if you’re not facing the traffic you could – at a push – feel like you’re on holiday. There’s a big gluten free menu which is a huge selling point and the wine list has some interesting choices. We were still wondering about the ‘experience’ bit by the end, but maybe that happens at the weekend…

65-69 Norwood Rd, Herne Hill, London SE24 9AA

Fish Lounge

Round the corner from Olleys is Fish Lounge in Brixton, where you can stagger in after a few bevvies and find what you need at the counter or sit comfortably in the back of this spotless fish joint and be looked after by the wonderful staff. We loved the lightest, crispiest batter we’ve tried, perfectly balanced by fluffy chips and accoutrements. For the money, Fish Lounge seriously over delivers.

99 Brixton Hill, Brixton, London SW2 1AA

Michael’s Fish and Chip Bar

Michael’s Fish and Chip bar is a Wanstead classic as the queues outside the door will attest. Enormous portions of simple, yet delicious food to take away for not very much money at all. It’s the ultimate, comforting treat that you won’t feel bad about having every week! Well, not from a financial perspective anyway..

The Pavement, Hainault Rd, London E11 1EG

English Sparkling Wines to go with Fish & Chips

With the warming batter and white fish, you need a crisp, refreshing, white wine with some bubbles to clean the palate. What better match for English Tourism Week then, than English sparkling wine? Here are three you must try:

Ridgeview Bloomsbury NV, on offer at £21.49 from Waitrose Cellar (down from £28.99)

Golden, crisp and classic, made with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Sussex. Gives most champagne a run for its money.

Balfour 1503 Brut NV, #21.99 mixed 6 price from Majestic.

Think crisp apple, brioche and citrus; just what you need to balance the batter! Made by Hush Heath in Kent.

Raimes Sparkling Blanc de Noirs 2013, £29.99 from Fareham Wine Cellar

If you like your bubbles with a little more grip and red fruit flavour, try this wine, made from Pinot Noir and Meunier by the new kids on the English wine block: Raimes in Hampshire.
