Poppies Fish & Chips
If retro in spades is what you’re after, then give Poppies a try at either of their London locations. Waitresses in red headscarves, jukeboxes and even jellied-eels give the place a fun, fresh diner-esque appeal. The fish and chips are to die for and while not the cheapest, it’s the full experience you get, just minus the sea.

Olley’s Fish Experience
Talking of ‘experience’, Olley’s in Herne Hill is an interesting place. Laid out in brown wood like a seafront restaurant circa 1984, if you’re not facing the traffic you could – at a push – feel like you’re on holiday. There’s a big gluten free menu which is a huge selling point and the wine list has some interesting choices. We were still wondering about the ‘experience’ bit by the end, but maybe that happens at the weekend…
