Evarae has a very bohemian or exotic ring to it. Where does it originate from and what is the story behind the brand and its designs?
The name comes from a small boat we had when I was a child in the South of France, it was very modest but I spent many summers on it. It was during this time I developed a love of the sea and travel and it was around the same time I had a au pair that was studying at St Martins Fashion College, I used to watch her sketch and simply decided that’s what I wanted to do, being a designer. I was then lucky enough to work for many other brands before deciding to go on my own 18 months ago and set up EVARAE.
Looking at your collection, your personality comes through beautifully and they share the luxurious, beach-to-boat function that clearly reflects your lifestyle and upbringing. If you were to attribute 3 words that would describe this debut collection, what would they be?
Timeless, elegant, luxury.
Who for you is the Evarae woman? Where does she go on holiday? More importantly, what would be her favourite wine?
The Evarae woman is comfortable with herself, she’s effortless, classic and chic yet not afraid to experiment with shape and print. Quality and cut are very important to her as she belives in investment pieces that last season after season in her holiday wardbrobe. She is a varied traveler, Bahamas during the Christmas holidays, European destinations like Italy, Sicily or France for short breaks through the summer, Ibiza or Mykonos for a fun weekend, the Maldives for some R&R.
Her favourite wine would either be from the Paolo e Noemia d’Amico portfolio having tasted many of their wines having spent the summer at their beautiful estate in Italy or a South African wine such as a 2007 Hamiton Russell Pinot Noir.
Who were the people that inspired you along the way the most?
It has to be my family, my father taught me as a child how to draw and paint, my mother was a model in the 70s, she was incredibally glamourous and had effortless style I always looked up to, I was always in her warbrode. My stepfather is a yacht designer and I spent many childhood holidays searching old markets in the far east for hidden gems for his inspriations and latest designs, I found this very inspiring.
Do you have a favourite piece from your swimwear collection and resort line?
I love the Salenrena story in Lemon yellow its perfect for the coast of Italy or Capri, or staying in a lovely country retreat in Italy, like Paolo and Noemia’s Villa Tirrena.
How does the inspiration come to you most often?
It comes mainly from travel, textures, prints, fabrics.
What’s next for Evarae?
I am really excited about the SS18 collection, I feel it’s a step up from the debut collection and built perfectly on what has been started. We are shooting it in Sicily next month and then into Miami swimwear week and Splash in Paris to showcase it to buyers.
And finally, do you have a favourite wine and wine destination? If you were to go there now, what would you wear and why?
I love South Africa, my family have routes there and I was there last year shooting the debut Evarae campaign. I was lucky enough to take some time out and drive along the garden route visiting Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, I stayed in La Residence. It really left me speechless, old school glamour and luxury, the service was like no other, never bothered yet never left unattended. If I was there now I would be wearing something from the USARA range, it’s a black and cream print, very chic. It would go perfectly with the rustic ochre colours of the hotel walls and artwork.
