Iter Vitis, the Cultural Route of the Council of Europe certified in 2009, has celebrated the 5th edition of the Iter Vitis Award in Santiago de Compostela- Spain.

This year 13 categories were awarded in addition to the joint prize with the Phoenicians’ Route. The ceremony was organized with the support of the Junta de Galicia and Iter Vitis Spain.

Representatives of 10 of the 25 member countries were present: Azerbaijan, Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, Moldova, Portugal, Spain, UK, while 12 countries were awarded according to the judgment of the Scientific Committee of Iter Vitis.

The Iter Vitis Award not only seeks to reward best practice in the field of wine tourism, but also the initiatives that protect and promote the millenary tradition of grapevine and wine and the landscape connected to them, innovation, and respect for environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

2022 was a very important year of commitments and growth for Iter Vitis, 15 years after the foundation of the Iter Vitis International Association we continue to enlarge its net and work for the promotion of viticulture as a fundamental element of the heritage of the continent of Europe.

The Prizes

Three of the prizes were awarded to Bosnia Herzegovina, one of the last countries to have reached the route, with Mostar as the Best Wine City Iter Vitis 2022, Trebinje as the Best Sustainable Destination, and the Tvrdos Monastery for enhancing historical heritage and wine.

From the archeology side, the wonderful Jabal Moussa Biosphere Reserve becomes Best archeological site 2022, and the unique and incredible Barberini Vineyard -Colosseum Archeological Parc receives the award as Best practice in wine and cultural tourism related to archeobotany.

The prestigious Museo del Douro is awarded as Best Wine Museum, while the Special Award Paolo Benvenuti for the safeguarding of endemic and ancient grape varieties, very important to us because it is named after our beloved former president, is assigned to Interprofession Vignobles du Sudouest, which has made the protection of indigenous vines a mission and a constant commitment.

Moldova with Vinopera by Chateau Mimi wins the prize for Best Wine Tourism Event and the Azerbaijan Tourism Board after years of hard work in developing wine routes receives the Best emerging wine tourism destination award.

The Junta de Galicia, which also holds the role of Vice President of Iter Vitis Spain with Laura Dopeso Gonzales, receives the well-deserved award for Best public institution supporting wine and cultural tourism.

Winerist one of the most famous tour operators dedicated to wine tourism is awarded for having created the Best innovative wine tourism development tool for its technology: WineristGO! the latest generation widget for online booking of wineries and experiences.

The Italian magazine Wine Meridian confirms itself as the leader in the communication sector in the world of wine and wine tourism also for the constant openness to news from all over the world and receives the Best wine tourism communication tool for Wine Meridian Today.

Georgia Technical University, which has invested so much energy in academic works for the enhancement of wine tourism, wins the Best University award for working on the promotion of wine tourism.

Finally, Best wine experience is the award received by Wine Garden of England-Kent which reminds us how many new interesting destinations have sprung up in the UK for wine lovers and what wonderful experiences and activities the English DMOs have been able to create.

The joint prize Iter Vitis with Phoenician’s Route will be presented in Croatia to the Municipality of Porec.
