Mike Graham from talkRADIO is a secret wine buff, turn outs. I always enjoy our live sessions in the studio. Today we were talking Autumnal reds and tasting the most Autumnal of them all: Pinot Noir.

Pinot Noir is the grape that truly captivates the hearts of wine lovers as the best ones have something so haunting; otherworldly almost, all stewed cherry, dried leaves and earthiness. It makes some of the lightest red wines around, which I think is why it’s so hard to get to know. After all, it’s much easier to get to grips with a spicy, full-bodied blackcurrant bomb, like Cabernet Sauvignon. Learning to love Pinot takes time.

Do a Tasting Tour of Pinot Noir

My advice to anyone wanting to get to know a grape is to do your own Tasting Tour and by that, I mean try the grape from it’s three or four most famous locations on earth. Wine 1: Taste the Difference Pinot Noir, Rheinhessen, Germany £8 from Sainsbury’s

Very pale, pinky red. Crunchy red cherry and refreshing tartness.

Wine 2: Taste the Difference Pinot Noir, Aconcagua Valley, Chile. £7 from Sainsbury’s

Darker, more oncentrated raspberry, cherry and flinty smokiness. Much more powerful that the German.

Wine 3: Taste the Difference Pinot Noir, Marlborough, New Zealand £10 from Sainsbury’s

Spicy morello cherry with jammy red fruit. Warmer!
