GET TO KNOW MURAT

When did you discover your passion for wine?

I discovered my passion for wine about 15 years ago.

What are your key highlights of the Thrace wine region?

If i have to choose the key highlughts of the Trace wine region i believe the Gallipoli peninsula and battlefields, Edirne, the capital of Ottoman Empire before Istanbul and the Ganos wine region, Mürefte and Hoşköy towns paritcularly on the coastline of Marmara sea cannot be missed.

When are the best times to visit the Thrace wine region?

Best time of the year to visit Thrace starts from mid may, the time of the year when the vines start to turn green and the weather becomes stable. The region is beautiful until at least late October, even mid November thanks to its mild climate.

What is a traditional local wine and food pairing dish?

Tekirdağ’s meatballs and Papazkarasi red wine can be a good match. Also fried liver from Edirne can be matched with the same wine. We can also match white wines from Yapincak grape with blue fish, mackerel or sardines from Sea of Marmara or Black sea.

Finally, what would be your top 3 tips for the keen wine traveller when visiting your region?

Top three tips for Thrace can be: visit Edirne and its monuments and taste fried lamb liver, visit the town center of Tekirdağ and taste meatballs in one of the köfte (meatball) restaurants and go to see Gallipoli battlefields and taste delicious fish caught in the Dardanelles Strait.
